Grandma’s Dumpling
When I was a little girl, I’d spent Wednesday afternoons with my grandma. Looking back, I think it was just her way of giving my mom a little time to herself to run some errands without having to drag me along. Around 10 or so in the morning, Grandma would start cooking. One of my favorites was this lentil and vegetable soup with dumplings. I just loved that soup better than just about any other meal on this planet – and to be honest, I still feel about it this way.
In fact, I liked it so much that my grandmother started to call me dumpling. Both she and my mother would try other bean and lentil recipes, but the only one I would willingly eat was this particular lentil soup. Now I have a little girl of my own and she loves it just as much as I do. And while I’ve acquired a taste for other bean dishes, she also won’t touch any other dry bean, pea or lentil. Funny how things repeat themselves.
